California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress (CAASPP)

The CAASPP System is intended to provide parents and students more accurate and actionable information about what students are learning. These assessments also provide better information about the needs and successes of individual students.

The CAASPP System includes  Smarter Balanced Assessment (SBA), California Alternate Assessment (CAA), California Science Test (CAST), and California Alternate Assessment for Science. Topics assessed include ELA and Math at grades 3-8 and 11, and Science at grades 5, 8, and high school.

For more information please visit the California Department of Education website.

English Language Proficiency Assessments for California (ELPAC)

The state of California utilizes the ELPAC to measure the English Proficiency Status of our grades K-12 English Learner students for both Initial and Summative assessments.

ELPAC (cde.ca.gov)

Initial Assessment Window

July 1 - June 30

Test students whose primary language is anything other than English within 30 calendar days after first enrolled, or within 60 calendar days before the date of first enrollment in a California public school, but not before July 1.

Summative Assessment Window

February - March

Test all EL students once a year, during the Summative Assessment window, to measure their progress in learning English until they are reclassified to fluent English proficient.

Physical Fitness Test (PFT)

The State Board of Education designated FitnessGram as the Physical Fitness Test (PFT) for students in California public schools. The primary goal of FitnessGram is to assist students in establishing lifetime habits of regular physical activity.

Public school students in grades 5, 7, and 9 are required to take the PFT, whether or not they are enrolled in a physical education class or participate in a block schedule.

FitnessGram is composed of six fitness areas with a number of test options provided for most areas:

  • Aerobic Capacity
  • Abdominal Strength and Endurance
  • Upper Body Strength and Endurance
  • Body Composition
  • Trunk Extensor Strength and Flexibility
  • Flexibility

For more information on this assessment, please see the California Department of Education website.

Accountability

State accountability is assessed via the California School Dashboard.

California School Dashboard

The California School Dashboard features easy-to-read reports on multiple measures of school success, including test scores, graduation rates, English Learner progress and suspension rates. The Dashboard is the next step in a series of major shifts in public education as a result of the Local Control Funding Formula. The Dashboard will be published annually each fall and will incorporate the most recent available data.

California Model Five-by-Five Grid

California's accountability and continuous improvement system is based on a five-by-five colored table that produces 25 results using five colors. Performance for state indicators is calculated based on the combination of current performance (Status) and improvement over time (Change), resulting in five color-coded performance levels for each indicator.
