Student Transportation

Student transportation will be consistent with current State Statutes and with the California State Department of Education Regulations and Laws Relating to Pupil Transportation in California; transportation will be made available to each and every student of the District on an equal basis under the policy provisions of this section. Transportation is provided by the District on an optional basis and is supported by State reimbursement, District funds, and “cost covering” charges to eligible users.

Transportation by private carrier may be provided whenever such practice is more economical than using District-owned vehicles. Parents may be reimbursed for transportation of eligible students whenever such practice is more economical or convenient for the District.

District vehicles will not be allowed to travel on private roads or county roads that are not maintained.

Students will not be transported home-to-school or school-to-home if they reside within the following walking distances of their school of residence:

Grade Level Minimum Distance from School
K - 6 1.5 Miles
7 - 8 2.5 Miles
9 - 12 3.5 Miles

Minimum distances from schools within which transportation will not be provided shall be measured by the shortest useable and reasonable route from the residence of the students to the nearest point on the boundary of the school campus.

Should the routing of a bus over a route to give the best service to the greatest number of students in a reasonable amount of time demand it, some students, depending on grade level, may be expected to walk from 1.5 miles to 3.5 miles to a bus stop. (Parents/guardians, of course, could provide transportation to and from the bus stop).

Students living within the minimum distances listed above may, at the discretion of the Superintendent of his/her designee, be transported home-to-school should special hazards or conditions warrant.

Summer School transportation will be provided using major pick up points.

Study Trips augmenting the curriculum are encouraged within budget limitations.

Intra- and inter-district scholastics activity buses are encouraged and transportation will be provided when available.

Booster and spectator trips may be provided on a “cost-covering”, priority basis.

Student Organization Trips should be encouraged and transportation will normally be provided on a “cost-covering”, priority basis. Authorized passengers shall be those for whom the bus use was requested.

Supervision by a school principal or person in charge of an attendance center or school is responsible for providing supervision of students while they are waiting for an/or immediately after alighting from a school bus.
