Alternative Credits Towards Graduation
To meet individual student needs and encourage all students to complete their high school education, the Board of Education desires to provide flexibility in the completion of prescribed courses in accordance with law.
With the active involvement of parents/guardians, administrators, teachers, and students, the Board shall adopt alternative means for students to complete the prescribed course of study required for high school graduation. These alternative means shall be made available to students, parents/guardians, and the public.
The Superintendent or designee shall determine whether a student has satisfactorily met alternative means towards graduation. Students may fulfill any course requirement for graduation through the following:
1. Practical demonstration of skills and competencies
a. Opportunities to demonstrate skills and competencies shall include, but not be limited to, challenging a course through successful completion of a district-developed examination which covers course objectives. The district shall not use results from the General Educational Development test or other state or national tests for this purpose.
2. Supervised work experience or other outside school experience in accordance with Education Code 51760.3 and 5 CCR 1635
3. College Courses for Vocational or Career Technical Education Degree/Certificate Programs
4. Interdisciplinary study
5. Independent study
6. High school level course work taken via correspondence/distance/online learning through an accredited college or university
7. Credit earned at a postsecondary institution
a. Credit for Dual Enrollment College Courses
b. Credit for Concurrent/College Early Start taken from CCC/CSU/UC or other accredited colleges and universities.
8. Private instruction in accordance with 5 CCR 1631
9. Correspondence instruction from a California university or college accredited for teacher training in accordance with 5 CCR 1633
10. Military service and training in accordance with 5 CCR 1634
11. To satisfy the district's driver education requirement, a program approved by the Department of Motor Vehicles which offers driver education in accordance with Vehicle Code 12814.6
12. For credit toward the district's world language requirement, world language studies successfully completed in a private school in accordance with 5 CCR 1632
Upon receiving advance, written application by the student or their parent/guardian, the Superintendent or designee shall determine whether completion of the proposed alternative means would satisfy course requirements for graduation and what documentation shall be required, if any, to verify the student's successful completion. The Superintendent or designee shall make the final determination as to whether the student's completion of an alternative means is sufficient to satisfy the district's graduation requirements.
As appropriate, the Superintendent or designee shall determine the grade to be assigned to students for the completion of any of the above alternative means. When a grade is assigned by a private school, postsecondary institution, or other educational institution including schools outside California for completion of coursework, that same grade shall be awarded by the district provided that the Superintendent or designee has determined the alternative course to be substantially equivalent to a district course.

Juvenile Court School
The district shall accept for credit any coursework satisfactorily completed by students while detained in a juvenile court school or county or state-operated institution. District students who successfully complete district graduation requirements while so detained shall receive a diploma from the school they last attended.
A semester period is one period of 40 to 60 minutes of instructional time per week throughout one semester of at least 17 weeks, or a minimum of 12 clock hours of instructional time provided during the academic year or in summer school. While the content to be covered is planned within these time frames, a student may be granted one semester period of credit even though the student spends less than the aforementioned amount of time in completing the necessary work.
Practical Demonstration of Skills and Competencies
Opportunities to demonstrate skills and competencies shall include, but not be limited to, challenging a course through successful completion of a district-developed examination which covers course objectives. Commencing in the 2024-25 school year and starting with the 2025 SBAC, students in grade 11 who score (3) ‘meets’ or (4) ‘exceeds’ standards in English Language Arts or Math on the Smarter Balanced Summative Assessment in the respective subject will earn graduation credit. Not to exceed 10 credits per subject.
- If a student in grade 11 earns a 3 or 4 on the ELA Smarter Balanced Summative Assessment AND needs remediation graduation credit in 9th grade English, 10th grade English or 11th grade English, the student shall be given a maximum of 10 credits in 9th grade English, 10th grade English or 11th grade English.
- If a student in grade 11 earns a 3 or 4 on the Math Smarter Balanced Summative Assessment AND needs remediation graduation credit in Integrated Math 1, Integrated Math 2, or Integrated Math 3, the student shall be given a maximum of 10 credits in Integrated Math 1, Integrated Math 2, or Integrated Math 3.
- Credits may only be earned from SBAC ELA or Math subject area tests taken during enrollment in a Lodi Unified School District high school.
- Students who qualify will be assigned a “P” grade on their transcript.
Supervised Work Experience Education
A student shall be granted up to 40 semester periods of credit for work experience education of one or more of the following types:

College Courses for Vocational or Career Technical Education Degree/Certificate Programs
Concurrent enrollment for vocational or career technical educational programs is allowed only with the prior permission of the school principal or administrative designee. A student may transfer credits from a community college or other college or university for purposes of graduation only with the prior written or recorded permission of the principal or administrative designee.
For students attending community college as special part-time students, credit shall be at a level jointly determined by the Board of Education and the community college Board of Education.
The principal's approval will reference the following conditions. Any one of the criteria below could result in approval for concurrent enrollment.
- The class is not offered in the high school of residence.
- The class does not supplant an existing course offering at the high school of residence.
- The student is credit deficient and may not graduate without the course.
- The student is participating in a school approved program, a special early graduation contract or program, or enrolled in a specialized school or district program that includes concurrent enrollment.
The principal may review a student's schedule of classes and/or course history to ascertain any special circumstances that would allow concurrent enrollment/credit.
A district form shall be used to record concurrent enrollment permission for courses taken at colleges that do not have a pre-existing approval agreement.
Credit for Dual Enrollment College Courses and Credit for Concurrent/College Early Start Courses
Dual enrollment and concurrent/early start courses are allowed only with the prior permission of the school principal or administrative designee. The principal must have granted prior (before the course is attempted) approval to a student to receive district credit for coursework completed at a community college in the California Community College (CCC) system, a California State University/University of California campus, or other colleges and universities.
These classes may or may not be used for high school credit and must be approved by the principal prior to attempting the class.
The principal's approval will reference the following conditions. Any one of the criteria below could result in approval for dual enrollment or concurrent enrollment.
- The class is not offered in the high school of residence (except seat-based dual enrollment).
- The class does not supplant an existing course offering at the high school.
- The student is participating in a school approved program, a special early graduation program, or enrolled in a specialized school or district program that includes concurrent enrollment.
A district form shall be used to record concurrent enrollment permission for courses taken at colleges that do not have a pre-existing approval agreement.
Credit/Concurrent Enrollment/Dual Enrollment Appeal Process
All denials of credit/concurrent enrollment/dual enrollment by an administrative designee will be referred to the principal for review. In the event that a parent/guardian appeals a decision to disallow credit for a course, a meeting with the principal is required. Procedures and forms necessary for an appeal must be initiated with the principal. Appeals will be reviewed by the area administrator, Educational Services, and processed according to the district complaint procedure.
Private Instruction
A student who is regularly enrolled and in attendance at a high school shall receive credit toward high school graduation for private instruction under the following conditions:
- The instruction entails fields and subjects included in the school’s courses of study and curricula.
- The student demonstrates their capabilities at the beginning and at the end of the period of private instruction by examinations given under the school’s supervision, thereby showing that they have made progress in learning satisfactory to the school.

- The student applies in writing to the principal or designee using the current district form and receives preapproval for the course in which the student intends to enroll.
- The correspondence instruction is approved by the University of California, or other university or college in California accredited for teacher training, in subjects included within or related to the student’s course of study.
- Correspondence instruction may be online computer-based instruction.
- The student is, for good reason, unable to take the course of study offered in the school.
- The Superintendent or designee determines the number of semester periods to be credited for successful completion of a particular correspondence course.
- No more than 40 total semester periods of correspondence instruction are credited to a student towards graduation.
Military Service and Training
Credit toward graduation shall be granted for military service and training received while in the military service of the United States, within the maximum limits established in 5 CCR 1634. A person is eligible for this credit if they are either:
- A former member of the Armed Forces who is a California resident and who has received an honorable discharge
- A member of the Armed Forces who is a California resident and was a California resident on the date they entered the Armed Forces
The Superintendent or designee shall keep a permanent record of the credit allowed for military service or training.

- The student or parent applies in writing for the credit.
- The amount of credit sought equals at least one semester’s work.
- The principal or designee determines that the student’s achievement is equivalent to that expected of a student of comparable ability taking the same or similar instruction in district schools.
World Language Instruction
The district shall accept for credit world language courses successfully completed in a private school, and shall apply the credit toward meeting any foreign language requirement prescribed for grades 9-12, provided that all of the following conditions are met:
- The courses are in languages designated in Education Code 51244.
- The student is regularly enrolled or applying to the district in grades 9-12.
- The student or parent/guardian applies in writing for the credit, specifies the private school attended and the amount and level of credit requested, and submits a transcript or other documents from the private school showing that the student successfully completed the course.
- The amount of credit sought equals at least one semester’s work.
- The principal or designee determines that the student’s achievement is equivalent to that expected of a student of comparable ability taking the same or similar instruction in district schools. This determination shall be based upon the private school’s report of a test developed by the private school in cooperation with the district or, if the private school is located outside the district, the principal or designee may use a test given by a public school or other evidence which they deem appropriate.
