Tie Votes in Board Member Elections
In the event of a tie vote among two or more candidates for the Board of Education in a given trustee area, the candidate to be elected to the board shall be chosen by lot. Candidates who have received tie votes shall be notified by the board secretary to appear before the board at a time and place designated by the board for the drawing by lot. The following procedure shall prevail:
Step A
To determine the order of the draw for election to the board, slips of paper equal to the number of candidates each bearing a number in numerical order shall be placed in a suitable receptacle. Candidates in alphabetical order by last name (A-Z) shall then remove a slip of paper from the container, and the number listed thereon shall dictate the sequence for the next step.
Step B
To determine the winning candidate, slips of paper equal to the number of candidates, an appropriate number of which shall be blank and one of which shall bear the word, “winner,” shall be placed in a suitable receptacle. The candidates in the order determined by Step A shall then draw a slip of paper from the container, and the person drawing the slip of paper with the word, “winner,” written thereon shall be declared elected to the board
