State Mandated Assessments

CAASPP - California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress
  • The CAASPP System is intended to provide parents and students more accurate and actionable information about what students are learning.  Because the Smarter Balanced Assessments, which are administered as part of the CAASPP system, are computer adaptive, these Assessments will also provide better information about the needs and successes of individual students.  The CAASPP System includes the following assessments: SBA - Smarter Balanced Assessment, CAA - California Alternate Assessment, CAST - California Science Test and, CAA for Science - California Alternate Assessment for Science.

  • Topics assessed include: ELA and Math at grades 3-8 and 11, and Science at grades 5, 8, and high school.

  • Grade level practice tests are available on the CAASPP Web portal at http://www.caaspp.org.

  • Understanding CAASPP Score Reports - The parent guides to understanding the score reports for Smarter Summative in ELA and Math, California Alternate Assessment in ELA and Math, California Science Assessment, and CAA for Science, are available at https://ca.startingsmarter.org/.

ELPAC - English Language Proficiency Assessments for California. 
  • The state of California utilizes the ELPAC to measure the English Proficiency Status of our grades K-12 English Learner students for both Initial and Summative assessments. 
  • Initial Assessment Window: July 1 - June 30: Test students whose primary language is anything other than English within 30 calendar days after first enrolled, or within 60 calendar days before the date of first enrollment in a California public school, but not before July 1. 

  • Summative Assessment Window: February - March: Test all EL students once a year, during the Summative Assessment window, to measure their progress in learning English until they are reclassified to fluent English proficient {RFEP}.

PFT - Physical Fitness Test
  • The State Board of Education designated the FITNESSGRAM(R) as the Physical Fitness Test (PFT) for student in California public schools.  The primary goal of the FITNESSGRAM(R) is to assist students in establishing lifetime habits of regular physical activity. 

  • Public school students in grades five, seven, and nine are required to take the PFT, whether or not they are enrolled in a physical education class or participate in a block schedule. 

  • The FITNESSGRAM(R) is composed of the following six fitness areas with a number of test options provided for most areas: Aerobic Capacity, Abdominal Strength and EnduranceUpper Body Strength and Endurance, Body Composition, Trunk Extensor Strength and Flexibility, Flexibility

Optional Assessments

ACT - 
  • The ACT is a national college admissions examination that consists of subject area tests in: English, Mathematics, Reading and Science. ACT results are accepted by all four-year colleges and universities in the US.

California High School Equivalency Tests - 
  • California has approved the use of three high school equivalency tests for students 18 years and older, and 17 years old in some instances, for the purpose of receiving a California High School Equivalency Certificate. These three tests are: General Educational Development (GED), High School Equivalency Test (HiSET), and Test Assessing Secondary Completion (TASC).

CHSPE - California High School Profieicieny Examination
  • CHSPE is a test for students who need to verify high school level skills.  In some cased, students take the test and leave high school early to work or attend college. Those who pass the test receive a Certificate of Proficiency from the State Board of Education, which is equal by law to a California high school diploma. 
  • People who are 16 years of age or older may take the test. Younger people who meet other criteria can also take the test. This test is given twice each year at many sites in California. The test covers three subjects: reading, writing, and math. There is a fee to take the test.

College Board - SAT and AP
  • Each year, the College Board helps more than even million students prepare for a successful transition to college through programs and services in college readiness and college success - including the SAT and the Advanced Placement (AP) Program. The organization also serves the education community through research and advocacy on behalf of students, educators and schools.

NAEP - National Assessment of Education Progress
  • NAEP provides a common yardstick for measuring the progress of students' education across the country. While each state has its own unique assessment, NAEP asks the same questions in every state - making state comparisons possible.
  • NAEP reports information on student performance for the nation, states, and in some cases, urban districts in a variety of subject areas. NAEP also presents results for different student groups (including data by gender, socioeconomic status, and race/ethnicity). The results of NAEP are released as The Nation's Report Card. There are no results for individual students, classrooms, or schools.
